SHELL (TABBY) FINISH

Bring timeless coastal charm to your outdoor space with a shell (tabby) finish patio or walkway from Goodwin and Son Concrete Services. We blend traditional craftsmanship with durable materials to create textured, eye-catching surfaces that are as strong as they are beautiful.

Shell finish adds texture and charm - timing the exposure step is critical for a consistent look. Creating a high-quality tabby (shell) concrete finish - commonly seen in coastal regions - involves extra care during finishing to expose shells attractively.

  1. Site Prep: Clear, excavate, and compact the base just like a standard slab; good drainage is key to longevity.

  2. Formwork: Build sturdy forms that define the layout and maintain the desired slope for water runoff.
  3. Reinforcement: Place rebar or mesh to strengthen the slab and help prevent cracking.

  4. Concrete Pouring: Use a concrete mix (around 3,000–3,500 psi) with shells already mixed in or sprinkled on the surface.

  5. Shell Application: If not pre-mixed, broadcast clean, dry oyster shells over the wet surface, pressing them lightly into the concrete.

  6. Finishing: Wait until the surface begins to set, then wash or expose the top layer with water and a broom to reveal the shells without dislodging them.

  7. Curing & Sealing: Keep moist for proper curing (5–7 days), then seal to protect from moisture, salt, and stains.
